FOOD Production Minister Vasant Bharath is expecting "cutbacks" in the 2012 Budget allocation to his Ministry to be presented tomorrow, but he is hoping that he will be given enough funding.
Bharath said, "We may not be in a position to do all of the things we may want to. There are certain constraints, for example the Budget is going to be delivered on Monday and we know that there are going to be cuts in our budget because there are only limited resources."
He was speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the refurbished Otaheite Fish Landing Site on Friday.
Bharath said, "Everyone realises that the whole issue of food security is so important. I expect to be in a position next year to spend more money in the agricultural sector and the fishing sector in Trinidad and Tobago."
He said even though the "grand plans" of the previous administration may not be carried out, facilities will be provided for various areas in different ways.
Bharath said one of the ways the country could make revenue was to make best use of its local produce.
He said, "There are many things the agribusiness association has been experimenting with but has not been able to commercialise."
He said the ministry was embarking on a project to grow the scorpion pepper the hottest pepper in the world.
Bharath said, "A product like that apart from agriculture it could go into things like making mace and products around the world." He said many local products can be used to make other items.
Bharath also said the buffalypso animal, bred locallywas " an animal that is almost lost to Trinidad".
